Since its foundation in 2010, the /slash film festival has been paying tribute to the ghosts of cinema: horror, science-fiction and fantasy. For steirischer herbst, the Viennese festival-makers have dug up three rarely screened classics of horror cinema that are all about undead revenants. Zombies have no business here, though – undead are not soulless meat bags but uncannily all but indistinguishable in their behaviour from their living selves.

In the modern gothic horror film “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death” by John Hancock, 1971, a mentally unstable young woman travels to an old house by a dark lake only to find that a certain Emily has already moved in. Bob Clark’s “Deathdream”, 1974, tells of a Vietnam veteran who disturbs people with erratic, violent behaviour after returning to nuclear family suburbia in the US. In “Dead & Buried”, 1981, written by Alien screenwriter Dan O’Bannon, a sheriff investigates a series of brutal murders. He starts to think he is losing his mind when he hits a passer-by with his car and finds the severed arm still twitching on his grill, until the accident victim seizes it and flees.

Three select /slash films prove it – nowhere else do the dead live longer than in cinema.
