The anniversary logo

Horst Gerhard Haberl – former herbst director, and rector of the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saarbrücken (HBKsaar) – has designed a special logo for the anniversary. You will meet it throughout the festival as it will mark the anniversary productions and activities.

Ceremonial speech by Georg Friedrich Haas

During the ceremonial „50 years steirischer herbst” act, Georg Friedrich Haas gave a celebrated speech titled „steirischer herbst – oder warum Europas ältestes Festival für neue Kunst ausgerechnet in der Steiermark stattfinden muss.“ – it can be read in its entirety here.

Diese Wildnis hat Kultur

In its special exhibition, the GrazMuseum traces fifty eventful years of festival history, analysing the socio-political role of steirischer herbst and its programme in the context of its particular historical background and retrieving curious finds from the archives.

herbst archive

Did you know that Samuel Beckett wrote the only commissioned piece in his lifetime for steirischer herbst? Or that it was Martin Kippenberger who designed the poster for the 1997 festival? steirischer herbst invites you to browse through its history: on guided tours of the festival archive or in the online database.

A city walk with a difference: experience the city of avant-garde art as never before, digitally and analogue, with your eyes, ears and taste buds in this audio walk. You may even be surprised by some unexpected encounters with history made visible once again.

trigon 67/17

Fifty years back, there was a great stir when “trigon 67” totally reinterpreted the exhibition format, presenting genrespanning configurations of space as artistic works. Contemporary artists are now set to respond to this historic project at the original location.

Festival centre at Palais Attems

After years of roaming the city, in the festival’s fiftieth year steirischer herbst is now declaring its headquarters as the new festival centre. With spectacular roofing over the courtyard, an installation in public space, a wide range of events, a bar and restaurant.

Where Are We Now?

steirischer herbst is opening a philosophical canteen for serving up performances and talks that open up the leitmotif for discussion in this friendly setting: from Oceanic thinking and alternative logics of being-in-the-world to a decolonial view of a Eurocentric “we”.

Stories of a ”Festival that Explores the Times”

Sensational projects, silent provocations, and pioneering decisions! In conversations, contemporaries from fifty years of festival history recall key moments in art and politics.

Public space has always been an important place for steirischer herbst. This app not only gives access to more than 100 interview excerpts but also to original audio recordings related to projects in public, space since the foundation of steirischer herbst in 1967.

we are here!

What happens when we have no more air to breathe? Or when we cannot find a place in a hyper-capitalised neighbourhood? This exhibition also refers to “trigon 67” and investigates the role of architecture as a catalyst in the relationship between the human being and the environment.

Up Into the Unknown & Graz Architecture

The guiding theme of Kunsthaus Graz at this year’s herbst festival is architecture. Contemporary artists are invited to explore the projects on show at the two exhibitions and to comment on them from today’s vantage point.

A ball at musikprotokoll! Yes, seriously! To celebrate the 50th instalment of musikprotokoll, Graz’s Stefaniensaal is being turned into a ballroom: contemporary composers write, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra performs, and the audience dances along.

herbstbuch

On the occasion of the anniversary of steirischer herbst an artist’s book recalls the history of the avant-garde festival: in fragments, subjectively, and without any nostalgic window dressing. Artistic contributions make each copy a unique collector’s item.

Where Are We Now?

A book as a commissioned work. The publication brings together snapshots, biographical contextualisations, political analyses and demands on the practice of fifty artists and theorists whose works have shaped the steirischer herbst festival over the past decade.

#herbst50 – anniversary blog

In the anniversary blog herbst50 we present highlights and surprises, bizarre, scandalous, great things from 50 years of festival history. Sometimes it gets also very private when guests and participants share their personal memories in the category "my herbst".
